DIVERSITY

Although all of us
are the same in some ways, and very different in others, we categorize ourselves, or others categorize us, into various groups based on some real or perceived similarities and/or differences.

This can be justified, useful, and practical, but it also opens the way to many conflicts between groups, in addition to conflicts between individuals.

International, inter-"racial", inter-religious enmity/strife are very much our concern again. Economic and social status, age, gender issues, degree of physical and mental ability, or ideology are also often bases for discrimination, exclusion, or hatred to the point of violence.

    We must learn to let go of our prejudices, and our hateful behaviours.  We must learn to accept that we live in a multi-faceted world, where we need to cooperate in our efforts to provide a fulfilling life for all of us.

from

Peace in the Family of Man

  By Lester B. Pearson

Can we find a way in which the energies, yes, even the aggressiveness, of young people, indeed all of us,

can be applied to making the world better instead of worse?

If we need a moral equivalent for war, and we do, we have it at hand

in the need to attack and defeat poverty and deprivation and discrimination and injustice;

in the challenge for creative social change;

for service to the family of man.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to
the starless midnight of racism and war
 that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality....
I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
